AB’s Wedding Tips From the Masters: Bentley Meeker on Lighting the Perfect Wedding, Perfectly

Today’s Featured Master: Bentley Meeker, Lighting Designer for The Knot’s “Valentine Weekend’s 14 Weddings at the Empire State Building”
Expertise: Wedding Lighting
Website: Bentley Meeker Lighting & Staging, Inc.
About the Master: Lauded by everyone from Hollywood, to the fashion world, to the White House, Bentley Meeker’s lighting is “exceptional” … and as Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones said of his lighting for their wedding, “It takes two film actors to know that.” Whether he’s creating fantastic effects for P. Diddy’s birthday party, lighting the opening of “Sherlock Holmes,” or creating subtle, or stunning, effects for weddings, Meeker’s lighting is premier.
Tip: “There’s a primary misconception about light: people think of it just in terms of providing visibility. But it doesn’t just provide visibility – lighting creates a feeling. Lighting is artistic.
We have all walked into some places and felt, ‘This is so great!’ … and then walked into others and thought, ‘Hmm, this doesn’t feel so great – let’s leave.’ Lighting has an enormous amount to do with that. When thinking about your wedding and lighting, it’s important to think about the feeling you want in the room, and then work with the lighting expert to create that feeling.”

I couldn’t agree more. Lighting is often forgotten as an important element in weddings. Not just artificial lighting but also the natural lighting when doing an outside wedding. I always mention it to couples I consult.
